A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
