The anticipation about The Game Awards was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
