Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the ability to challenge specific rulings made by the official, echoing the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
